"Can You Keep a Secret?" By: Sophie Kinsella

The second book I am currently reading is Can You Keep a Secret? By: Sophie Kinsella.  This is the perfect chic- flick popular fiction book and I am absolutely head over heels in love with it. I actually did some research on the author and she also wrote Confessions of A Shopaholic, which I found kind of interesting.  The overall plot is very unique.  The story takes place in England and 25-year-old Emma Corrigan is in the midst of a somewhat stable career as a junior marketing executive for Panther Sports Drinks.  She has a boyfriend, good parents, and an average life.  One day when on a plane ride, (Which she is terrified of,) she begins blurting out all of her deepest, darkest secrets as the plane is hitting turbulence and she thinks shes about to die. The poor guy in the seat next to her has to listen to all this.  Long behold, this guy is the owner and the creator of her company and pays a visit to her work a couple of weeks later. Embarrassed, she apologizes and tries to quietly excuse herself.
She is miserable.  Her older cousin Kerry, whom she envies, is always pestering her about her job and asking her when she will get a promotion.  She doesn't get the promotion, she is in debt to her father, and is not really in love.  Throughout the book, Emma is in search of her "One big shot,"  and wants to find true happiness. A quote that really stuck to me was, "A relationship is a game of chess..." "Mummy says you always have to look ahead.  You have to plan strategically.  If you make the wrong move, you've had it." I like this quote because it holds true to life. When in a dating relationship, it is so easy to say or do the wrong thing and ultimately be rejected by the other person.  This correlates to the sub theme of rejection.  Another quote I found interesting was, " Stay serene and loving and remember that we are all sacred links in the eternal circle of life." Emma uses this quote several times in order to cool off and appreciate the people around her.  In the grand scheme of things, this book is a lot like Desperate House Wives or something of that nature. Love it! Can't wait to read more! ;)
